OriginalNotes: OTHER:Pioneer Painters of Indiana, Peat, p. 239, 140-42: born in Randolph Co. [VA, p. 140; NC p. 239???]; while still young his family moved to Fountain City; his father assisted with Underground Railway. At about age 30 he came to South Bend accompanied by brother who bought farm in Green Twp. He went to NY to learn painting, married and returned to South Bend to establish himself as professional artist. In the middle of the 1860s he apparently became interested in the processes of photography and began to use photographic print as the foundation of some of his portraits. Examples of combined techniques date from about 1868. In 1869 his family moved to McHenry Co., IL; in 1878 moved to Jasper Co., Missouri where he bought a farm. d. in 1897.
