Dewey's Daguerrean Establishment is a decided feature in the city...one of most extensive & elegantly appointed saloons in America...contains large collection of portraits of distinguished individuals, views & c. rendering it a delightful resort for persons of taste. The Madison Daily Courier, Nov. 17, 1854: Dewey has returned from Charleston, Clark Co., where he has been engaged in taking the likeness of the "oldest inhabitant" as well as most of the youngest. When all these pictures are collected they will form a superior gallery. And now, during all sorts of daylight & sunlight, Dewey is plying his art and declares that if the pictures he is making of the citizens of Madison are ever collected they will in the aggregate form one of the most splendid galleries of beautiful specimens in the world. The Madison Daily Courier, Jan. 12, 1855: Dewey's Daguerrean Gallery: Notwithstanding the hard times and harder currency, the low price of the excellent and life like pictures made at Dewey's are in great demand. At the earnest solicitation of numberous patrons, Dewey has consented to remain a month or so longer. "Catch the shadow ere the substance flies." Dewey's gallery of specimens of his art is now one of the best and as extensive as any in the Western states. The Madison Daily Courier, Mar. 3, 1855, p. 2 ad: Dewey Daguerreotypist offers by advertisement in today's paper to devote his labor to the benefit of the poor fund in all the work done ...during the present dull season. All he asks is to be paid for the materials used. A very liberal offer on the part of Mr. Dewey...; p. 3 Benefit to the Poor! $100 will be donated to the poor of Madison on condition that 400 Daguerreotypes Pictures are taken or paid for at usual rates, at Dewey's Daguerrean Rooms, within 30 days from this date. $50 will be given if 200 taken within 15 days, $25 if 100 taken within 10 days. By arrangement, all pictures taken by either Dewey or Gorgas will be estimated.
