Find A Grave 91342210 - Marvin Cathcart, b. 26 Jan. 1826, Ohio County, IN, d. 20 Jan. 1909 (aged 82) Buchanan, Berrien County, Michigan, buried there in Oak Ridge Cemetery; lists parents James and Prenina (Leonard) Cathcart; note that the text gives his birth location as Wayne County, Indiana; he and brother Ira served together in Civil War, Marvin was a musician as a buglar in the Brigade Band  in Co I, 88th Ind. Inf.; m. Martha Adelinie "Addie" Roe, on Aug. 21, 1867 in Berrien County, MI. Marvin was a photographer, in Buchanan, Berrien County, MI. His death cert. states that he was father of no children. (Daughter Nellie must have been adopted).

11 May 1858: ad. Cathcart's New Ambrotype Rooms, Thralls' Brick, 3rd story.
3 Aug. 1858 praise for Cathcart's photos, Thrall's Bldg.
Sept. 3, 17, 24; Oct. 8, 1858: Ad: to remain in place only few wks. Longer. The Excelsior Rooms, M. Cathcart, Artist, Ambrotypes, melaineotypes, sphereotypes.
Nov. 12, 19; Dec. 3, 1858 [ad gone by 17 Dec.]: The Last Week All those wanting ambrotypes, malainotypes, photographs, & c taken in the best style of the art will do well to embrace this last opportunity.  Call at the Excelsior Rooms. M. Cathcart.
24 Dec. 1858: Den. Thralls has purchased the Ambrotype rooms of Mr. Cathcart and is now taking pictures equal to the best.  Ad for D. R. Thralls says call at the old stand, 3d story, Thralls' New Brick, Warsaw.

A Twentieth Century History and Biographical Record of Elkhart County, Indiana
edited by Anthony Deahl, 1905, p. 114 - It will interest any person to know that the oldest daguerreotypist still living in the United States, Marvin Cathcart, a resident of Buchanan Michigan, and over eighty years old, at one time had an establishment on Main street in Bristol, and no doubt there are examples of his art in numerous homes in this vicinity. He was also leader of the band in this town.

Marvin Cathcart Find A Grave 91342210: By time of the 1880 census, Marvin owned a photo studio in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan;  An index to the "Berrien County Record" newspaper, in Buchanan, Michigan oftens shows a mention of Marvin Cathcart. Feb. 3, 1870 - Mr. Cathcart in getting lumber on the ground to commence the building of his photographic gallery, on East Front Street.  April 7, 1870 - Mr. Cathcart's studio is finished on Main Street. July 8, 1870 - Mr. Cathcart's new photo gallery is completed.
