And was born at Bradford in 1841. He commenced life as a school teacher at Mansfield, OH and during the war of the rebellion served as member of the Third Ohio Cavalry in 1861received honorable discharge in 1866. During the day a trip was made to Broad Ripple in a steam yacht, where a number of landscape negatives were made. POTTER, second child of Jacob and Mary A. (Mickle) Potter, was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, Jan. 8, 1841, and died at Dayton, Ohio, Sept. 14, 1913. He married, at Perrysville, Ohio, July 18, 1866, Pearl Parr, born at Perrysville, Ohio, Oct. 5, 1846, and died Feb. 27, 1921. Pearl Parr was the daughter of Andrew H. Parr, born Oct. 16, 1807, and Lucina Donaldson, his wife, born Oct. 4, 1809. Both were born at Pittsburg where they grew up and were married in 1831. They moved to the vicinity of Perrysville, Ohio, in 1834. Lucina Donaldson was the daughter of Robert and Isabella (Clendening) Donaldson. William H. Potter enlisted as a private in the Third Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and about 1863 was promoted to corporal. On Sept. 10, 1864 he was promoted to ordinance sergeant. In 1865 he was mustered out as captain of Company I, One Hundred and Thirty Seventh Ohio Volunteer Cavalry having served four years, four months and eight days. He was never wounded but he was captured once and exchanged immediately on parole. He was a member at Indianapolis, Indiana, of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. Following his discharge from the army William H. Potter studied law at Mansfield, Ohio, three years, during which time he taught school to support his family. He then entered into partnership as a photographer with his brother, Ezra, at Mansfield. In 1875 he removed to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was one of the eight men who were founders of the Photographers Association of America (now an international organization), and in 1886 he was president of the Association. Son of Jacob and Mary Ann Potter. Mansfield News: Monday, February 2, 1925: Mr. Potter was born in Wayne County, September 19, 1844, and enlisted in the 3rd O.V.C. Co. E. in 1861. He was in service for about three years and four months, during which time he engaged in many battles, among them that of Stone River; was taken prisoner at Benton, Tennessee, and retained as a prisoner for eleven months, was exchanged at Charleston and discharged at Columbus. Following his discharge he was married to Miss Mary Backenstoe and established a photograph gallery in Mansfield from which business he retired about 15 years ago. During the management of his business Mr. Potter became known as one of the most proficient photographers in northern Ohio. Mr. Potter was a member of the McLaughlin Post, G.A.R., of this city. The reception parlors are in charge of a accomplished lady assistant and are pleasantly arrnged and handsomely furnished, affording a pleasant waiting room for the numerous patrons who can always find entertainment and profitable amusement in an inspection of the elegant creations of his artistic skill. He makes a specialty of card and cabinet portraits, his prices being the very lowest consistent with first class work.
