Hull who for several years has conducted at No. 510 Broadway, one of the most popular and successful photograph galleries in northern Indiana has decided to retire from business. In retiring he has taken care to see that the gallery passes into worthy hands and has succeeded in disposing of it to Mr. J. H. Roeder, of Chicago, an artist who is eminent in his profession and who will give the studio his personal supervision. Mr. Roeder and his family expect to remove here the latter part of next month. He has had 15 years experience in the business and will give the people of Logansport the benefit of the most approved metropolitan styles. Mr. Roeder is also an expert in India ink, crayon and water color portraits, which he will lmake a leading feature of his gallery. Logansport Pharos-Tribune, 13 May 1893, p. 5 - A Business Change - S. S. Hull the veteran photographer has sold his photograph gallery to J. H. Roeder of Milwaukee, who took charge of the business yesterday morning. Logansport Pharos-Tribune, 13 May 1893, p. 20 - J. H. Roeder, of Chicago, arrived here yesterday and opened negotiations with S. S. Hull, the veteran artist, for the purchase of the latter's photograph gallery over 510 Broadway. Mr. Roeder returned to Chicago last night, and upon his return Monday the deal will be closed. Mr. Hull and fmaily will spend the summer here. Logansport Reporter, 26 May 1893, p. 3 - [states that J. Roeder's photography studio, [summarized] "his high talent has brought him into favor with some of the most prominent first class houses in Chicago, with whom his services are still in demand," opened stuio at 510 Broadway on May 22, 1893, "he has come to stay . . . Those who know him personally cannot but conclude that he has not stepped in our midst to fleece the public, but that he is here to do legitimate services. Among the specialties Mr. Roeder offers, are his life size portraits in India ink, crayon, water-color and oil. Another prominent specialty is the instantaneous process of taking children's pictures." "Mr. Roeder also employs an embossing press, the only one in the city, by means of which he is enabled to finish his photos in such a manner that all rubbing and scarring of the surfaces of pictures when placed in the album is prevented. This is an entirely new feature and proves particularly successful and pleasing." "One gratifying feature of his large work is the fact that he insures it against fading. All his large work is finished with the air brush, that marvelous little instrument of dainty mechanism, which renders the color and shading strictly permanent."
