My dad, Edward J. Curtis, was born in Vermont the same year the Civil War started, 1861, thus making him fifty-six when I was born; old enough to be my grandfather. Other than being raised on a farm and going through the eighth grade in school, I know very little about his childhood. I understand that as early as possible he left home and struck out on his own, working for a while as a farm hand in Iowa, and I remember him talking about having been in Louisiana and Texas. I also remember him talking about bicycling; riding what he called "centuries", a distance of 100 miles on several occasions. The bicycles he rode were the old fashioned kind with a huge wheel in front and a tiny one in back. I have no way of knowing the chronological order of these trips. By 1885 he was started in photography. This was in the days of glass negatives and the need to coat their own printing paper. In 1898 or 1899 (he was 37 or 38 at the time) he applied to become attached to an Army unit as a photographer in the Spanish-American War. The war ended, however, before the necessary paper work could be completed so he had no military service. As near as I can reconstruct the time, he was married the first time sometime in the 1890's and had two children, a boy and a girl. The boy, who was the older of the two, ran away from home when he was 16 and was never heard from again. Attempts to find him, including contacting the Military services during World War I failed. The marriage ended in a bitter divorce, probably around 1910. By the time my mother entered his life he had been a resident of Indianapolis for twenty-five years, and owned and operated a successful photo studio in Indianapolis. Needing a receptionist (girl Friday, I presume), my mother applied for, and got the job.
