Discusses career of Lester C. Nagley, Sr. who has been dabbling with photography for 30 years. A former staff photographer for an Indianapolis newspaper, he has saved all his negs since 1904 totaling some 10,000. He first became interested in taking pictures upon watching the late J. M. Pogue of Greenfield develop 8"x10" negs in a pantry closet. Discusses Lumier autochrome plates he used to make lantern slides of news events for Roltaire Eggleston, manager of Keith's Theater [ca. 1915]. Each week he made 25 new still photographs. Also made color photographs of malignant skin disease for Dr. Brayton. PERIODICALS: OTHER: In about 1988 a son or grandson of Nagley called the IHS talking to Susan Sutton claiming that the James Whitcomb Riley photograph with children was taken by his father, not Bass as he had seen it credited. In about 2010 Karen Horseman bought a group of glass negatives on eBay that included the Riley with children image. She donated them to the Indiana Historical Society. Indianapolis Star, Spring 1997: Obituary for Wilbur I. "Bill" Nagley, Sr. 80, Atlanta, GA lists surviving brother and sister. The Daily Reporter (Greenfield, Indiana), Aug. 23, 1962, p. 12, "Hoosier Vignettes" by Lester C. Nagley, Sr: "Barton Rees Pogue's father, James M. Pogue, who lived in Greenfield during the 90s, was largely a commercial photographer but he did take on some portrait work and became an expert re-toucher. He was a veteran schoolteacher but he did photographic work during the summers, as well as carpentry work, too. He gave me my first instructions in photographic work, too."
