Joseph Krementz (1840-1928) "had displayed artistic talent as a child in Germany but apparently received more formal instruction from Carl Pfetsch, a native of Germany who was active in New York City in the 1840s and 1850s, then in Cincinnati, New Albany and Indianapolis, where he died in 1899. Pfetsch, who changed his name to Fetsch at some point, was a prize-winning portrait and genre painter who had been trained in photography. Krementz became a portrait and landscape painter and a professional photographer.

1882 Polks Indianapolis CD, p. 618: Carl P. Fetsch listed as artist, 30 Bates blk.

New Albany Daily Ledger (New Albany, Indiana), March 29, 1899
Carl P. Fetsch, for many years a resident and leading photographer of this city, removing from here to Indianapolis in 1870, died in that city on the 28th, of brain trouble, aged eighty years. Mr. Fetsch was a fine artist as well as photographer, his paintings being much in demand. When he left New Albany for Indianapolis he carried away a good deal of money with him, which he deposited in the Ritszinger bank, which failed, causing a loss of the whole amount of ready cash Mr. Fetsch possessed. He leaves a widow and two sons – George E. and Charles T. Fetsch. The remains will be brought to New Albany for burial on Thursday.
