Her Spirit Photographs - Mrs. Foster Makes Spook Pictures and Goes to Jail
Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 7 - Mrs. Martha Foster, a spirit photographer, is being held at the Central police Station I this city, but at whose instance is not clearly known. Mrs. Foster says she came to Indianapolis at the request of William Hancock, the wealthy manufacturer, for the purpose of taking a spirit photograph of his child, which has been dead several years. While at Hancock's house she was called upon by several prominent citizens, for each of whom she did work. She claims that her arrest is due to a young man at a leading hotel. Mr. Hancock was called upon last night at his residence on New York street. In one corner of the room half parted and strung on wires were curtains of some black stuff concealing a table on which were bottles that might contain chemicals used by a photographer. The appearance of the room indicated Mr. Hancock's strong belief in spiritualism. Mr. Hancock said: "I paid Mrs. Foster $50 for her three days' work here and altogether she has gotten about $500 from me. She finally got a picture of my dead child that satisfied me. The pictures were always taken in the dark. Since she had been here there has been talk of fraud. I would give all I possess were I sure that this woman is not a fraud and that spirit photographs is an assured fact. If tomorrow she is proven innocent, and nothing is found in her trunk, I will give her willingly half I possess." The woman succeeded in getting some money from several other people in town, and is well supplied with cash.

Wilson's Photographic Magazine, Mar. 1893, p. 126: Mrs. Martha Foster and her son have been arrested again in Indianapolis for pretending to make "spirit photos" of the dead.
Wilson's Photographic Magazine, Apr. 1893, p. 180:  Frank M. Lacey is expert witness in suit against Mrs. Foster and son.  Lacey writes: "We are more fortunate in securing the outfit of Mrs. Foster than were the gentlemen who brought Mr. Mumler before Police Justice Dowling, of New York.  The Case of Mrs. Foster and her son is brought by one of our wealthy citizens, who, with many others, had been votaries at the false shrine. I found a transparency in the tablet and a lot of pictures and other paraphernalia in her trunk and valises, which we examined at the Criminal Courtroom.  I only asked the information you sent to show that the fake is an old one, and long since exposed."
