I. Butler, of Pendleton, has opened a gallery at Greenfield, Ind. The gallery at Pendleton will continue in his ownership, but will be operated and managed by Miss Emma Hair. Hancock Democrat (Greenfield, Indiana), April 5, 1923, p. 1 Local photographer doing exceptional work in group photography. He has made the pictures for the local high school annuals for so long that he has come to be considered as the official annual photographer. Mr. Butler was here as early as 1902, and stayed 6 years. Then he moved to the west and did not come back until 1911. The second time he came here he succeeded Mr. Cuyler, the famous photogrpaher of the Riley "Swimmin' Hole." He has been here ever since. Hancock Democrat (Greenfield, Indiana), January 11, 1906, p. 4 Mentions that Mr. Butler, photographer from Greenfield, took picture of Sanford family. The Daily Reporter (Greenfield, Indiana), Aug. 23, 1962, p. 12, "Hoosier Vignettes" by Lester C. Nagley, Sr. "Two of the now-forgotten photographers of Greenfield were W. B. Cuyler and a man by the name of Joseph I. Butler, both of whom were in business in Greenfield when I was a young boy in the early 90s. I can remember how Mr. Cuyler looked but the countenance of Mr. Butler has faded from my 'memory-screen', it seems." [see also Cuyler and Pogue]. "By contrast, I recall that Mr. Butler was a more phlegmatic man, much heavier in build than Mr. Cuyler, and spoke with a slow drawl, I recall. I believe that Mr. Butler took the first of the small miniature pictures in Greenfield which were sold in strips of about six for a quarter. I believe he called such pictures Buster Brown prints." [Good general article about skylights, prices, etc.] [NOTE: Nagley was born in 1891] 1916-17 Ind. Butler, for many years a well known photographer of this city, is again in the harness, having purchased the Cuyler gallery, on West Main street, in this city. Mr. Butler went out of business some years ago on account of poor health. Having regained this, he returned to his chosen profession. Miss Kate Harlan, who has had charge of the Cuyler gallery for several years, will remain with Mr. Butler for a time.
