Obituary for Michael Clare of 88 Barthold St., Fort Wayne [father of the photographer]. Died suddently of apoplexy at age 57. Was fine landscape gardener brought to this city from Cincinnati by Hon. I. D. G. Nelson and given position at Elm Park. Leaves wife and 3 children in destitute circumstances. Wife is blind and one of the children is a cripple. 

1880 - Find A Grave 84105234 for Bridget Clear (b. 1820 in Ireland, died July 10, 1880, buried Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. "Bridget was 60 in the 1880 census. The census also indicated that she was suffering from consumption. Two sons were living with her: William, 23; and Michael, 16."

Their son, John, was born in about 1851.

"M. J. Clear Studio Seeks More Room" - M. J. Clear, the photographer, making changes in appearance of his studio in Gibler block. Has leased the front rooms of the 2nd floor, formerly occupied by Hart & Jackman, and is having an arch-way cut between them and his present quarters. New rooms will be used as reception and office rooms and will be handsomely furnished and decorated. His studio will thus extend the entire length of the second floor of the building and be one of exceptional attractiveness. Mr. Clear's exhibit is an attractive one but could not be displayed to advantage in the cramped quarters. His business has grown in the last ew months so as to make larger quarters almost necessary and the change wil prove very advantageous.

"Huntington and Photographers." Mr. Clear's Studio. M. J. Clear has been working at photography since a mere boy. He was born at Fort Wayne and learned his trade in that city. After spending several years at his home he left Fort Wayne and spent six years at the trade in Illinois and Missouri in some of the leading art studios. In 1889 he returned to Bluffton and conducted a gallery until four years ago when he located in this city. He purchased the gallery formerly owned C. W. Longdon, who now runs a studio in Chicago. This place was owned for many year by E. B. Radabaugh, who had the only studio in the city for twenty-one years. The business was well established and Mr. Clear had no trouble in taking Mr. Longdon's place and holding the trade. Every one who is acquainted with Mr. Clear knows his ability as a photographer and knows his friendly and accommodating qualities.
