Photographer David Brainard Claflin was born 9 February 1837 in Northampton, Massachusetts, the son of Rial Claflin (1807-1898) and Hannah Waite Strong (1808-1870); the couple had at least seven children. In 1850, David was living with his parents and three siblings in Dayton, Ohio, where David’s father worked as a shoemaker; the family had real estate valued at $1,100. But in 1855, the family was living in Northampton, and David was listed as a clerk. In the 1860 census, David was boarding in Dayton, Ohio, and listed his occupation as daguerreotype artist. On 4 November 1860, David married Clara White Dickinson (born circa 1842) in Lafayette, Indiana; the couple would have at least two children. In the 1862-1877 period, Daniel was listed in Indianapolis, Indiana directories as a photographer; however, he was also listed in Lafayette as a photographer in 1866 and 1867, but he was boarding and did not have a permanent residence. In 1879, David was living in Toledo, Ohio, where he would remain working as a photographer until his death on 30 October 1895.
