Russell E. Smith in 1898 arrived in Attica and formed a partnership with Claude Thompson known as The Smith Studio, which opened for business on January 15, 1899 at a location at Perry and Jackson Streets where the present Standard Oil Station now stands. The studio was burned out December 5, 1900, the fire having started in the Purdy Candy Kitchen, next door. In January 1901, the partnership opened The Smith Studio at 105 ½ North Perry in Attica where it continued in business until June 1947 at which time it moved to its present location on highway U.S. 41 on the south edge of Attica. Also in January 1901, the partnership owned another studio in Boswell, Indiana, known as the Smith and Thompson Studios. In September 1902, the Smith-Thompson partnership was dissolved and Mr. Thompson took over the Boswell studio while Mr. Smith took over the Attica studio.
