Kevin Kilbane "Fort Wayne photographer's legacy: A visual record of the 1913 flood"
"At the same time [1910s?] Standish also opened and operated a photo studio near the carousel at Robison Park, a popular amusement park a short trolley car ride north of Fort Wayne. Along with taking portraits of people -- both serious and posing on props, such as a fake early airplane and a smiling crescent moon -- Standish took photos of important buildings and events like the Flood of 1913. He also had the ability to turn his photos into postcards." Robison Park closed in 1919. [article includes photo of Norman P. Standish's photo studio at Robison Park. Kevin Kilbane "Fort Wayne photographer's legacy: A visual record of the 1913 flood"
"Standish reportedly moved his studio the next year [about 1910] to 828 S. Calhoun St. and then in 1915 to 706 S. Calhoun St." In 1913 he was reportedly overwhelmed to orders for his flood postcards and aske his stepson Fred to come from Ohio to help with orders.
Fort Wayne Daily News (Fort Wayne, Indiana), December 23, 1913, p. 1
"Sensational Downtown Fire" Details about fire in the Bradley Flower store at 824 Calhoun due to a boiler explosion at 7 a.m. on December 23. "Occupants of the second and third floors of the Bradley building and the adjoining structures were asleep at the time of the fire, and firemen and policemen ordered them to the street. Standish, the photographer, thought that he could stay by his stock and save it, but realizing the futility of this very speedily he gathered a few belongings into a grip and fled to the street."
"Thought Standish Suffocated. Seeing that the fire might break into his photographic gallery, Standish rushed past the lines and up the narrow stairway into his rooms on the second floor. Firemen and police warned him to stay out, but he felt that he could save his lenses and get back to the street in time." Men called for him, got no response, and attempted to enter his studio, but the smoke was too thick. They covered their faces with handkerchiefs and searched his rooms, but did not find him and it was too hot. Fearing that the floors might collapse, the rescuers retreated to the street where they found that he had gone through his studio and up to the roof. Flames were confined to the Bradley rooms, but all buildings in the block suffered from smoke and water damage. "Standish on the second floor of the Bradley building and Hurdle, over the Aurentz candy store, suffered losses from smoke and water amounting to about $200 apiece."
