Mandeville of Valparaiso, One of the Pioneer Photographers, Was Also an Inventor - A long life of unusual interest recently closed at Valparaiso, Ind., in the death of Lewis H. Mandeville, a pioneer picture-maker of Chicago. Mandeville was a student under Lillibridge, one of the old Street picturemakers, and, aside from his knowledge of the art of making daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and ferrotypes, he is said to be among the first who made paper photographic prints. Mandeville had an interesting history from the time he left his old home in Trumansburg, NY, where he was born in 1823. His father was a fighter with Commodore Oliver H. Perry and afterward rendered service in the Seminole Indian campaign in Florida. Mandeville, the younger, when he was in his teens, had charge of the construction of asection of the Eric canal, and in years when his hand became too "shaky" to make pictures, he turned an unusual inventive genius to other work. [Article describes a queer educational model of the universe and heavenly bodies based on painting by U. S. G. Houston and made by Mandeville and kept at Northwestern University in Evanston. Also said to have invented the first grip car. Made miniature railways and steamboats and brought first sewing machine to Valparaiso. Invented balance valve for steam engines and a wonderful telephone model.] He had a wealth of knowledge about the early days of Chicago and once related that he landed at the spot where Fort Dearborn stood and when Lake street was a ridge of prairie. Cassius E. Mandeville, son of the dead inventor and picturemaker, lives in Chicago. Probably learned from Clark H. Lillibridge, a Chicago daguerreotypist from 1854-1859. See Craig's Daguerreian Registry. In 1854-1855 he had studio at 75 Lake Street, Chicago. Lillibridge worked for Alexander Hesler 1855-1856. Then until 1859 his gallery listed at 77 Lake St. Listed as photographist in St. Louis in 1860. Find A Grave 89863031 Lewis H. Mandeville, photographer, is a native of Trumansburg, N. Y., was born January 15, 1825, and is one of four children of Thomas C. and Mercy (Gilbert) Mandeville, natives of that state, and of Norman descent. Francis Mandeville, our subject's grandfather, was a soldier of the Revolutionary war, and Thomas Mandeville, our subject's father was a soldier in the war of 1812 and the Seminole war. Generations back, the family were among the nobility of Holland and England. Until thirteen years of age, L. H. Mandeville was reared in his native town. In 1838, he came to Erie, Penn., and there engaged as clerk in a dry goods store of that place, afterward going west of the city of Erie about six miles, where he took charge of the extension of the Erie Canal. While there, in 1850, he was united in marriage with Sarah Jane Brown, and moved to Adrian, Mich., where he engaged in farming. Then went to Tecumseh, Mich., where he kept hotel for about one year; then May 5, 1855, came to Valparaiso, where he has ever since resided. He here embarked in this present business. He is naturally of a mechanical turn of mind, and for a number of years has paid considerable attention to the mechanical work. He has invested several different engines, which have proved to be of great value as labor-saving instruments. The best and most noted of his inventions is an automatic telephone, which for a distance under three miles far exceeds any ever invented. Mr. Mandeville began life's battle a poor boy, but by industry and economy has placed himself and family in good comfortable circumstances. He is a Democrat; is the present Master of the F. & A. M., and has ascended to the R. A. degree. He and wife are members of the Universalists Church, and the parents of one son - Cassius E., who married Elma Wells, and is a dry good merchant of Valparaiso. Early Photographers of Porter County, on blog "Porter County's Past: An Amateur Historian's Perspective, by Steve Shook, dated April 30, 2017, updated April 4, 2019 (viewed April 30, 2019 by Joan Hostetler http://www.porterhistory.org/2017/04/early-photographers-of-porter-county.html?fbclid=IwAR35AFnb2sr3nusPUOrnOLkz1wm6IAbLSTp12_fi_XJSYFKfqQach_2oTQQ) Lewis H. Mandeville was a prominent early photographer in Valparaiso. Mandeville operated a photography studio on North Washington Street during the mid to late 1880s through at least 1905. He resided at 22 West Chicago Street and later at 38 West Chicago Street, Valparaiso. Mandeville imprinted all of his photographs with L. H. MANDEVILLE. Lewis H. Mandeville was born at Trumansburg, Tompkins County, New York, on January 15, 1823, the son of Thomas Clark Mandeville and Mercy (Gilbert) Mandeville. In 1838, Lewis migrated west to Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania, where he married Sara Jane Brown in 1850. Lewis and Sara then moved to Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan, where Lewis farmed. They then moved to Tecumseh, Lenawee County, Michigan, where Lewis operated a hotel for about one year. The Mandevilles arrived in Valparaiso on May 5, 1855. During the late 1850s, Mandeville was trained in photography at Chicago by Clark H. Lillibridge, a noted pioneer in daguerreotype, ambrotype, and ferrotype photography whose studio was located at 75 Lake Street. Lillibridge is reportedly one of the first photographers in the United States to use paper for producing photographic prints. Mandeville was well known as being very mechanically inclined and an inventor. A death notice for Mandeville states that he "is said to have invented the first grip car [railway cable car]. He built two or three miniature railways and two steamboats and is said to have brought the first sewing machine to Valparaiso. He invented a balance valve for steam engines and still later worked out a wonderful telephone model." Lewis H. Mandeville died at Valparaiso on December 25, 1906, and was interred at Union Street Cemetery in Valparaiso.
