EDUCATION: He wanted to be a painter, but because he lacked funds for art training, he became interested in photography.  He got all the magazines he could find and read as much as possible about the subject.  He also trekked 5 miles several times a week to talk photography with the only knowledgeable person in the area. Eventually he bought a camera from his mentor and soon left the plow for the darkroom. He learned retouching from Bundy of Terre Haute.

Traces, Spring 1991, "Pops Whitesell, A Hoosier in the Vieux Carre" p. 6 After perfecting making portraits of neighbors, Whitesell put an ad in the St. Louis and Canadian Photographer.  He had several offers, but chose one in Clinton.  Not one to be tied down, he held about 15 positions in as many years.
