Fletcher; large and excellent likeness of James Blacke [sic]; Dr. J. M. Kitchen; Gov. Willard; Dr. P. H. Jameson and lady.

Indianapolis Daily Atlas, Aug. 24, 1859, p. 3
Hays & Runnion have fine collection of Photographs of all sizes in their rooms on Washington St. Hays is a fine portrait painter himself, and the coloring and finishing of their Photographs are done in the very best style. The large likeness of Gen. Blake is splendid picutre, and there are many others in their rooms that will bear the closest scrutiny. There is no other establishment of the kind in the State, and their Photographs go to every part of Indiana. For cheapness and fidelity, their work is not surpassed.

Indianapolis Daily Journal, 24 Sept. 1859
Hays & Runnion would have won 1st premium for best collection of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and sun pictures if "sun pictures" included photographs painted by hand. Bailey and Spurgin were awarded the prize.

We notice at the door leading to the rooms of Hays & Runnion's gallery s how case filled with spicimen pictures that seems to be a permanent fixture...These photographs, particularly the coloring, are greatly admired. As a painter Mr. Hays has no superior, and he seems to be improving all the time. Case made by Mr. B. M. Spicer, 20 Market St.

April 1, 1861, Photographs on Canvas:
It is indisputable that the best photographs can be taken directly on canvas. The art has lately been improved by some new chemical application so as to make the canvas photographs the best in appearance, as they are certainly as regards durability. Mssrs. Hay & Runnion have been taking photographs in this way for some time. The Fine picture of Judge Hughes in the State Library, taken at their gallery and painted by Mr. Hays, is one of this kind. ...There have been some very recent improvements in the chemicals for preparing the canvas to be used in photographing which Messrs. Hays & Runnion are in possession of...32 1/2 E. Washington St.

Daily State Sentinel, 12 March 1862, p. 3
Portrait of the Late Hon. John L. Robinson -- We were shown at the rooms of Messrs. Runnion & Hays, photographists and artists of this city, executed by them a life size portrait, in oil, of the late Hon. John L. Robinson. The likeness was obtained from a daguerreotype, by photograph, and the coloring and expression of the features are from memory. The artists have succeeded admirably in giving a faithful representation of the marked features of one of the most distinguished men of Indiana, and whose early demise caused heartfelt sorrow among his numerous friends. . . The portrait, elegantly framed, is a present from the Hon. D. W. Voorhees to Mrs. Robinson . . . [article continues about friendship, family devotion, remembrances of loved ones, etc.]
