As a painter Mr. Hays has no superior, and he seems to be improving all the time. Case made by Mr. B. M. Spicer, 20 Market St. April 1, 1861, Photographs on Canvas: It is indisputable that the best photographs can be taken directly on canvas. The art has lately been improved by some new chemical application so as to make the canvas photographs the best in appearance, as they are certainly as regards durability. Mssrs. Hay & Runnion have been taking photographs in this way for some time. The Fine picture of Judge Hughes in the State Library, taken at their gallery and painted by Mr. Hays, is one of this kind. ...There have been some very recent improvements in the chemicals for preparing the canvas to be used in photographing which Messrs. Hays & Runnion are in possession of...32 1/2 E. Washington St. Daily State Sentinel, 12 March 1862, p. 3 Portrait of the Late Hon. John L. Robinson -- We were shown at the rooms of Messrs. Runnion & Hays, photographists and artists of this city, executed by them a life size portrait, in oil, of the late Hon. John L. Robinson. The likeness was obtained from a daguerreotype, by photograph, and the coloring and expression of the features are from memory. The artists have succeeded admirably in giving a faithful representation of the marked features of one of the most distinguished men of Indiana, and whose early demise caused heartfelt sorrow among his numerous friends. . . The portrait, elegantly framed, is a present from the Hon. D. W. Voorhees to Mrs. Robinson . . . We have heretofore had occasion to record the very flattering evidences of approval from those whose judgments are above question, and would again add that many additional evidences have been presented of the superiority of the articles on exhibiition. The fine life like pictures of Gen. Morris and the late Gov. Willard are models or artistic skill that will not suffer in comparison with the productions of our most eminent artists. The entire display is a credit to the exhibition, and honor to the city and is but one of the many evidences of commendable enterprise that has always characterized the exhibition. Persons who have not an opportunity of visiting the Fair should not leave the city without calling at the extensive and elaborate gallery of the gentleman in question. Daily State Sentinel, 9 September 1863, p. 3 Indianapolis Art Gallery--Every lady and gentleman arriving in the city ought to visit Runnion's Art Gallery, East Washington street, opposite Glenn's Block. The most faithful and the most beautiful pictures are taken at Runnion's Art Gallery--photographs or daguerreotypes. If our dear and lovely female friends, whom we respect and admire, will dress themselves in their best clothes and go to Runnion's Art Gallery, then, after his operator has performed, they will see themselves as others see them. Jan. 20, 1863: ad for Runnion's Gallery, opp. Glenn's Block. The painting dept. is still under the charge of Mr. Hays. Jan. 30, 1863: Runnion's Gallery still progressing and keeping up with, if not a little ahead of, the times. Runnion has recently added an improved light to his establishment...Mr. Hays still paints for Runnion's gallery. Feb. 26, 1863: Runnion's Gallery on Wash. St., opp. Glenn's Block, has all the recent improvements in the art of photographing. Pictures are taken on canvas, or raised from daguerreotypes, and painted if desired. The gallery is full of splendid specimens. Mar. 24, 1863: Runnion's Gallery has been recently refitted, and has all the modern improvements in the art of photographing. Mr. Ryder of Cleveland, an unequaled photographer, will give his assistance in the gallery. Mar. 31, 1863: Ad. Runnion keeps up with all the improvements in the art of photographing for he loves his art...Mr. Ryder, his chief operator, is well known at the East as one of the best photographers in the Union. Apr. 22, 1863, (Wed.): fire last eve. in Runnion's Gallery, discovered through the sky light, which slopes toward alley on east side...flames on 3rd story, reception room in front room of the 2nd story...some men climbed the awning poles to the windows and saved a few paintings and some furniture. With this exception the contents of valuable gallery were a total loss. The 3rd story of the front of bldg. was burnt out. The store below and lower part of building, which is deep, was occupied by Murphy & Holliday, as an iron store. Bldg. owned by Gen'l Tomlinson and was insured. Runnion not insured, recently added improvements, supposedly started by a spirit lamp in operating room. Apr. 23, 1863: The fire originated from what is termed the bath. It was usual to place alcohol lamp under it in eve & let it burn until 10 or 11 at night, when proprietor or operator would extinguish it. On the eve. of the fire the alcohol being out the lamp was filled with burning fluid...which took fire and communicated to the light wood work around the sky light. Runnion was in gallery about an hour before the fire, and Mr. Ryder, the operator, was about returning to it when the alarm was given. The insurance had run out about 3 wks. before, and had not been renewed. Discusses plans to repair in 10 days. Apr. 29, 1863: Workmen pushing along repairs at Runnion's Gallery The Star Gallery of the city will soon be in operation again, rising, like the Phoenix, from its ashes, with plumage brighter than before. May 9, 1863: work at Runnion's progressing rapidly, and by middle of the week, probably on Thursday next, the reception and operating rooms will be once more open to the patrons of the establishment. It will be more complete than before the fire.... May 27, 1863: Happy to announce that Runnion's Gallery has been reopened...furnished to surpass original. The reception room looks natural. Many of the familiar faces that adorned the walls are still there, as the furniture of that room was mostly saved uninjured. The operating rooms are more convenient than they were before, and also enlarged. Mr. Ryder is still on hand, in the operating room, and Mr. Goodwin, of New York, is in the finishing room, prepared to touch off pictures with India ink. June 3, 1863: Runnion is in full blast, every dept. being in 1st rate order... Runnion prepared to furnish colored photographs, painted in oil as heretofore, by Mr. B. F. Hays, who has been so long connected with this famous art gallery. Daily State Sentinel, 5 Oct. 1863, p. 3, 11th Indiana State Fair Runnion Every premium, as we have heretofore stated, was taken, on daguerreotypes, photographs and ambrotypes, plain and in oil, by the distinguished and accomplished Runnion of the famous Art Gallery, East Washington street, opposite Glenns' Block. The gifted and artistic Mr Phillip S. Ryder, who is with Runnion, fabricated the most of these pictures, almired enthusiastically by all, before the committee sensibly awarded the premium. 1864 Buell & Williams' Indianapolis Directory and Business Mirror for 1864, p. 230 Wm. Pictures taken by Mr. Ryder, who is ever gentlemanly and skillful in his department of the business, and colored by Mr. Penfold, who is an adept in the art of coloring, cannot fail to give entire satisfaction. Persons wishing pictures for themselves or friends, can get them at their establishment that cannot be beat in this or any other city. Give them a call at No. 32 1/2 East Washington street. Daily State Sentinel, 23 November 1863, p. 3 Mr. Runnion, who is untiring in his efforts to please the public, has at great expense, secured the services of Dr. Bushnell, the celebrated photographer, of the world renowned Root Gallery of Philadelphia; with Mr. Penfold, whose artistic taste and skill as colorist, needs no commendation. We can confidently recommend all wanting photographs plain, or colored, in the finest style, to give Mr. R a call.
