The Handbook of Texas Online (viewed Sept. 22, 2005) http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/SS/ccs6_print.html STEAMBOAT HOUSE. The Steamboat House was built in Huntsville by Rufus W. Bailey,qv a professor of languages at Austin College. In 1855 Bailey bought from the college five acres located northeast of town and described in the deed records of Walker County as part of a league of land originally granted to Pleasant Gray, one of the founders of Huntsville. Here in 1858 Bailey built the odd-looking house with twin turrets at the front and galleries on each side. Since it somewhat resembled a riverboat of that era, it acquired the name Steamboat House, although in the deed records the building and grounds were referred to as Buena Vista. Tradition holds that Bailey offered the house as a wedding present to his son, Frank Bailey, but the young man and his bride refused to live there. In late 1862 Sam Houston,qv having been deposed as governor the previous year, rented the Steamboat House and moved his family there from Cedar Point, his farm in Chambers County. The few months that Houston resided at Steamboat House were darkened by ill health and news of Vicksburg and other Confederate defeats. In midsummer Houston was stricken with pneumonia and died in the front room downstairs on July 26, 1863. He was buried in nearby Oakwood Cemetery, where his monument now stands. Bailey, who died three months before Houston, had willed all his property to his son. Thus Frank Bailey became the owner of the house he had rejected five years earlier. In November he sold the house and grounds, now including ten acres, to A. C. McKeen for $4,000. http://jsh.rice.edu/primary.cfm?doc_id=1335 The Journal of Southern History, Volume LXXI, 2005, FEBRUARY, Number 1 The Brief Career of Rufus W. Bailey, American Colonization Society Agent in Virginia By Ellen Eslinger http://www.iath.virginia.edu/staunton/history.html The earliest of the three was Augusta Female Seminary, founded in 1842 by the Reverend Rufus W. Bailey. Bailey was a career educator who had moved to South Carolina from his native New England in 1827. He eventually relocated in Virginia and appears to have come to Staunton with the specific intent of starting a school for girls. Shortly after his arrival, he met with community leaders to suggest establishing a seminary "of high grade for the education of girls and young women, distinctively under Presbyterian control."[4] His suggestion was accepted, and in August of 1842 Augusta Female Seminary was founded. Almost immediately Bailey began negotiations with Staunton's Presbyterians to use the vacant lot next to their church as a site for the new school. The congregation agreed and the cornerstone for the building was laid on June 15, 1844. Until the school building was ready, classes were held in the Craig residence on Greenville Avenue. http://pblib.utpb.edu/MARION/ACQ-9373 Bailey, Rufus William, 1793-1863 Used for: Bailey, R. W. Bailey, a teacher, minister and attorney educated in New England, came to Huntsville as a language professor at Austin College in 1855. He acquired an eight-acre tract on this site and erected a house which he named "Buena Vista," but which became known as "The Steamboat House" because its unusual design evoked the image of a double-decker steamboat. According to local tradition Bailey gave the house to his son, but the younger Bailey and his wife did not care for the architecture and none of the family ever lived in the house. Dr. Rufus Bailey served as both minister of the Huntsville Presbyterian Church and president of Austin College from 1858 to 1862. In 1862 Bailey rented the house to General Sam Houston, who had been living at his farm in Chambers County since being removed from the Office of Governor of Texas for refusing to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy. Dr. Bailey died early in 1863, and his son, F. B. Bailey, inherited the house. General Houston died of pneumonia at the Steamboat House on July 26, 1863, and his funeral was held there the following day. Dr. Pleasant W. Kittrell, friend and physician to General Houston, bought the property in 1866. He died of yellow fever in the 1867 epidemic. In 1873 his widow, Mary Frances Goree Kittrell, traded the house to her brother, Major Thomas J. Goree, a local attorney and Confederate veteran, who made extensive renovations to give the house a Victorian appearance. The house was moved one-half mile from this site in 1927; it fell into disrepair. In 1936 it was moved to the Sam Houston Memorial Museum grounds and was presented to the state on March 2, Texas Independence Day. Fair (note from the award committee explaining misunderstanding of this award--Hays & Runnion would have won if it was the intention of the society to include photographs painted by hand. If sun pictures are those that remain as the action of the sun's light left them, then the committee are forced to award the 1st premium to Bailey & Spurgin--with no competition). For clearness of expression and beauty of finish we have not seen it excelled. Mr. Bailey showed us, the other day, several new Hallotypes which he had made, which certainly cannot be excelled by any artist anywhere. He has a number of pictures of this kind at the metropolitan, and a larger number of photographs--likenesses of ladies and gentlemen of this city, and views of several of our public buildings. For a good photograph or superb Hallotype, go to Bailey at the Metropolitan, and if a superior daguerreotype is wanted, Mr. Ohr, at the same gallery, can supply it. Messrs. Ohr and Bailey are chief among the picture-makers of the country." Indianapolis Daily Citizen, Apr. 28, 1858, ad: For the best daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, photographs, hallotypes go to Ohr & Bailey at the Metropolitan Gallery in College Hall Building, E. Washington st., south side. All styles of pictures executed at this gallery in the most artistic manner, and as cheap as at any other establishment. Photographs, plain or colored in oil or water colors, from miniature size to full life size. Daguerreotypes of deceased persons copied, and enlarged to any size on paper of canvass, and colored by artists of unquestionable reputation. apr. 28-d2w. [ad last appeared Sept. 11, 1858] Indianapolis Daily Citizen, Apr. 28, 1858, p. 3: Fine pictures- account of visiting Ohr & Bailey's Metropolitan Gallery, spent 1/2 hour examining daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, photographs, and Hallotypes. Of the 2 last we found some of the finest that can be imagined. The photograph can be taken on paper or cards so as to be handled like an engraving, or be sent to a distance by letter. We are informed that engravings are actually copies, and books illustrated in the East, by that mode. The Hallotypes method produces likenesses that are superior to the finest miniatures in oil. Considerable money has been expended at this Gallery to perfect the arrangements, and we are glad to see that the efforts of the enterprising proprietors are appreciated by the public. Indianapolis Daily Citizen, May 4, 1858, p. 2: examined in Daguerrean Gallery of Messrs. Ohr & Bailey a life-size colored photograph of Andrew Wallace, Chief Fire Engineer, ordered by the Marion Fire Company. The picture was photographed on canvas by Mr. Bailey, and colored in oil by Porter, of Cincinnati. The subject is standing beside a table, hand on fireman's hat...at his right is representation of an open window, out of which is to be seen the "boys" running with the machine to a fire, the light and smoke of which are visible over row of business houses. The Capitol stands in middle ground... The price of such a work of art is $50.
