From city directories it appears that J. C. Patton worked in Indianapolis from about 1908-1925.  Tim Peterson says that he removed to Chicago and that a son continued the business until the 1960s.

Services for Mrs. Mary Gaddie, who died Monday in her home, 1135 Roach Street, will be held tomorrow in the First Baptist Church of North Indianapolis. Mrs. Gaddie, who was 77, was a native of Green County, Kentucky. She lived in Indianapolis, Indiana twenty-three years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Indianapolis. Surviving are her husband, Willie Gaddie; a son, James Gaddie of Indianapolis; a daughter, Mrs. Eva Middleton of Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. Lizzie Myers of Muncie; three brothers, J. C. Patton and Charles Patton, both of Chicago, and Alex Patton of Canton, Ohio; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Floral Park. [dated July 1, 1948]

Biography: African American photographer James Calvin Patton (1882-1958) operated Patton's Studio in Indianapolis in the 1910s and early 1920s. In the mid- to late 1920s, Patton relocated the studio to Chicago, making panoramic portraits of groups, including the 35th Annual NAACP conference and the Greater St. John Baptist Church Gospel Choir, through the mid-1950s.
