EducationCareer: apprenticed in Washington Court House, Ohio
FamilyInPhotography: son John, Jr.
OriginalNotes: http://www.rootsweb.com/~inmontgo/ [viewed 4/4/2006]
Tri-County News, Jan 23, 1958
When John Upp, Sr. was a farm boy of 17 on his dad's farm near Washington Court House, Ohio, he decided right then and there that far life possessed little if any appeal for him. In fact, John makes no pretense of the matter and says that farm works imply looked too hard in the estimate of a 17-year-old and he decided that surely there must be easier ways to make a living. That was way back in the 1880s and we suspect he may have had good reason to look with a prejudiced eye toward his future. At any rate, John walked to Washington Court House, had a talk with the local photographer about a career in that field. He was told he would have to work for the photographer for a year at no pay the while he was learning the many, many tricks of the trade. Even this appeared better than farming, so John didn't take long to make up his mind. A year later he had served his apprenticeship and was ready to start off on his own. Shortly afterwards, he said goodbye to Washington Court House, where he was born Oct 16, 1869 and went out into the big, wide world. He got his first job in Roanoke, Va and this was followed by others at Louisville, Ky; Dayton and Xenia, Oho; Goshen and Terre Haute, Ind. In 1898, John had his first look at Rockville and it appeared promising. He bought his own studio from Bill Overman and was in business. At this point it might seem appropriate to make a pun about photographers shooting people, but all we will say, is that John did shoot former president William Howard Taft when that dignitary was in Parke Co. at the Rockville Chatauqua in 1915. Among the notables John caught in his camera lens were Pawnee Bill and Uncle Joe Cannon. 30 years after he came to Rockville John caught the wanderlust and looked Far West. He sold his studio to Dick Burnett, loaded his family into his car and headed in 1928 for Rifle, Colorado. Arriving in Rile, he wasn't particularly impressed by what he saw, a rugged mountainous area around Moab, Utah, then came back again to the Midwest stopped a t Charleston, ill and remained there for 25 years before again returning to Rockville where son John Jr. was running his own studio. Jon Sr. now at 88, doesn't of course, do much photographic work. He lives with another son, David in an apartment above Upp's Studio in Rockville spends his days doing what he can to help out in the studio. He follows avidly the events of the day, has confirmed opinions about Sputnick, Handley's decision to run for senator, ex-President Truman's comments and the progress of the Milwaukee Braves. An ardent fisherman himself, John believes and probably very rightly, that many of the woes of the world could be dissipated if more people would take more time out to go fishing more often! Always a staunch Republican, partisanship means little to him today. We guess that when a person has lived 88 years he can be expected to regard with tongue in cheek the claims of any politician, no matter what badge he wears!
