Aug. 21, 1865 in Mercer County, Kentucky, died March 28, 1939 in Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana, buried Springdale Cemetery. Includes photo of Hafley as older man. Undated obituary on ancestry.com William T. Hafley died March 28, 1939. Born in Mercer County, Kentucky August, 21, 1865. At age 25 he left his native state and located in Edgar County, Illinois where he was married to Miss Alice Reed Sept. 6, 1891.Three children. Bessie Lurene, William Warner, who in infancy preceeded their father in death and Walter Louis who resides in Los Angeles, California. Reared in the Christian Church and always held to that faith but did not move his membership from St. Bernice, Indiana to Madison. Was also a member of the Modern Woodmen of American. He, with his family came to Jefferson County from Dana, Indiana about 28 years ago and for 8 years resided on a farm. The family has since been in Madison for over 20 years. Mr. Hafley for 41 years was a photographer and his studio was patronized by persons from far and near. He has served continuously as a Justice of the Peace for 17 years and would have been in office 18 years the 17th of next July. Surviving besides his wife and son Walter are his grandson Gerald Hafley, two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Mashon and Mrs. Porter Whitehouse, who reside in Kentucky and a number of nephews and nieces also in Kentucky. Squire Hafley as he was so widely known was possessed of a friendly and jovial disposition and believed in handing out justice equally to all who came to his office. Madison Courier (Madison, Indiana), March 29, 1939 Suicide Ends Career of Justice of Peace - William T. Hafley, 73, veteran justice-of-the-peace, and photographer, ended his life last night by firing a bullet into his head as he stood in his back yard at his home at 521 West street. Failing health and worries over business and financial conditions were given as the cause of his action. Mr. Hafley suffered concussion of the brain three years ago when struck by a car as he crossed Main street with the late Frank Wells. Although he had gone to his office as usual he had not been well and appeared to be concerned over his health and financial worries during the last week or so. After returning from a building association meeting, soon after 7:00 last night, Mr. Hafley gave his wife his pocketbook and asked her to keep it for him. A few minutes later she heard the report of a gun in the back yard. Investigating, she found him dead on the walk, from a bullet wound which had been fired at close range. The bullet entered his head behind the right ear and he had died instantly.During an investigation by Dr. O.A. Turner, county coroner, Mrs. Hafley revealed that her husband had complained recently of a severe pain in the back of his head. It had caused him to grieve over his health and on one occasion recently when Mrs. Hafley mentioned that their son, Walter, of Los Angeles, California, had planned to visit them soon, Mr. Hafley remarked "I won't be here when he comes." Mr. Hafley left a note to his wife and son bidding them goodbye and asking their forgiveness. Mr. Hafley was born in Mercer county, Kentucky, where he lived until he reached the age of 23 years. He went to Paris, Illinois, then to Dana, Indiana, before coming to Jefferson county about 28 years ago. After living on a farm near Madison for about eight years, he came to this city and had been living here since. 1910 Census, Vermillion Co., Helt Twp., Dana William T Hafley 44, b.
