The History and Practice of the Art of Photography, Henry Hunt Snelling (New York: G. P. Putnam), 1849, pp. 10-13

The Photographic Art-Journal:
Jan. 1851, p. 46: Article "Photography on Paper and on Glass" by T. A. Malone, From the London Art-Journal, p. 46 refers to applying method [a coating of silver salts?] to wood-block for wood engravers. Editor [presumably Snelling] footnotes this with: We understand that Mr. Wattles of this city, of whom we have spoken on a former occasion, has invented a process for impressing an image upon "blocks of wood for wood engravers," the result of which has met his most sanguine expectations. We should be pleased to have it communicated for our columns.--Ed. Pho. Art-Journal.
V. II, No. 2 (August, 1851), p. 73, footnote: mentions that Mr. Wattles of New York "informs us that he has succeeded in obtaining an impression [of the moon] the size of a half-dollar perfectly distinct." --Ed. [Henry Hunt Snelling]
American Art Journal, "A Piano Prodigy Who Turned His Attention to Science," Sept. 19, 1896, pp. 370-71: article about James Otis Wattles musical career, now working at Lembke's optical studio. "Mr. Wattles, who is the son of [James Miles Wattles] the discoverer of the process that renders photographs permanent, invented an absolutely perfect instrument for making an exposure in an infinitesmal fraction of time by the introduction of the shutter." Devoted time to scientific instruments.
