Joseph Gray Ketchell, b. 25 Apr. 1862, Ohio; d. 7 July 1945, Los Angeles; son of Joseph Sample Kitchell and Henrietta Staub; m. Carrie Lincoln Jacobs, son Joseph William Kitchell

Encyclopedia of American Biography, 1800-1902, KITCHELL, JOSEPH GRAY, artist, author, was born April 25, 1862, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1900 he produced the Kitchell Composite Madonna, a blend of the most important Madonnas painted by the great masters during three centuries. He is the author of American Supremacy.

SFE The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, [viewed March 9, 2019 by Joan Hostetler; http://www.sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/kitchell_joseph_gray] Joseph Gray Kitchell, (1862-1945) US businessman, photographer and author, whose early novella, The Story of the "Kranbach Nocturne" (1905 chap), treats the eponymous Basilisk as soul-saving. His full-length sf novel, The Earl of Hell (1924), combines high adventure – its protagonist travels the world in search of new sources of radium, is kidnapped, foils a plot to supply "Hunovia" (i.e. Germany) with a brand-new Power Source – and an informed discussion of the potentialities of new forms of energy. Nilgrav, the new Element stolen for Hunovia, combines aspects of Antigravity and perpetual motion (see Scientific Errors); it serves both as a Weapon and as the motor for new forms of Transportation. [JC]

San Francisco Call, 17 Dec. 1899, p. 3, Full page illustrated article: The Famous Kitchell Composite Madonna. Composite copy photographs of famous Madonna paintings, copyrighted 1899 by Kitchell. "Joseph Gray Kitchell, aged 35 years, is a native of Ohio, but lived for ten years in New York. For the last two years he has conducted a high-class residence studio for photo portraiture in Indianapolis, similar to those operated by James L. Breese in New, York and Steffins in Chicago. Mr. Kitchell comes from a family of artists, an uncle having been awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor in France for painting. He is also a cousin of Mme. Julie Rive-King, the famous pianiste. He spent the winter three years ago at Bella Vista Hotel m San Francisco. Mr. Kitchell is married to a daughter of. Dr. William Jacobs, a Californian."
