THE AMERICAN DAGUERREOTYPE (Rinhart), p. 403: portrait & religious painter, dag'typist, photographer, painted portraits Lebanon, OH also painted coaches. Engaged in lithographic work, took dag'types and photographs.  During 1854 and 1854 painted panorama of Uncle Tom's cabin and other subjects.  Moved to Richmond, Ind. ca. 1866; taught public and Sunday schools and had drawing academy. Info. from THE NEW YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY'S DICTIONARY OF ARTISTS IN AMERICA, 1754-1860.

Indiana Magazine of History, "Marcus Mote and His Pioneer School of Design," Opal Thornburg, Dec. 1855, pp. 323, 327: Samantha Hankins worked for 5 yrs. as assistant to Marcus Mote in Lebanon, OH. Moved to his Richmond studio on Jan. 18, 1864. She remained for 4 yrs. Temperamental differences made their association a mixed pleasure, but he missed her company when she left. His assistants helped fill in backgrounds in portraits and assisted in intruction in his school. p. 326 In 1869 Mote moved his studio from the 2nd floor of Vaughn's Bldg. at 104 Main St. to Vaughn's new bldg. at 298-300 Main St., where he occupied 3rd floor. Streets were later renumbered, but older residents who remember Mote say that his studio is where the Roy Hirshburg is today, 710 Main St.
