OTHER:Pioneer Painters of Indiana, Peat, p. 94; moved to Richmond about 1870, studied under his uncle; and received instruction from Harry Hilliard and Barton Hays, of Indianapolis. Specialized in portrait painting, adopting the method so popular at that time of glazing over enlarged photographs. He went into partnership with his brother Elisha, conducting business under the name Mote Brothers, Artists and Photographers. In early 1890s he opened an art school in his studio at 828 Main St., which was moderately successful. Died in 1917.

The Philadelphia Photographer, June 1874, p. 191: The firm of Mote & Swaine, Richmond, Ind. was dissolved 4 Mar. 1874. Mr. Swaine retires and the business is continued by Messrs. E. J. & W. A. mote.
