Nellie graduated in 1889 and was named the best scholar of the high school class; she received a scholarship from Adrian University in Michigan (no record that she ever attended).
From Bausch and Lomb "Lens Souvenir" 1903:
"My first attempts at photography were made emrely out of politeness, a friend having presented me with a pocket Kodak with a request that I become "an expert photographer." After using it a few times, a vague idea of making real pictures with the tiny thing entered my mind. At that time I had never seen or heard of a photographic magazine of exhibit, and had received no instruction in any branch of art. In fact, I refused to have anything to do with 'painting lessons.' The same little bird on the same little bough with the same mass of leaves, which everyone painted, did not appeal to me. So . . .
