OriginalNotes: [Note: It is unlikely that Arthur I. Fischer is the same as the Arthur J. Fischer listed below. The Arthur I. Fischer in Indianapolis in 1857 was at same location as Wm. And George I. Fischer, who were probably related. Arthur J. Fischer of Maryland was the son of George and Isabella and he had siblings named William and George. They would have only been ages 15 and 10 in 1857, so this is unlikely to be the same person.]

Past and Present of the City of Quincy and Adams County, Illinois, p. 857
Arthur Johnston Fischer, photographer of Quincy, b. in Frederick, MD on August 28, 1836, son of Dr. George J. Fischer and Isabella Johnston. Children: Arthur, Virgina, William, George. At age 18 [circa 1854] Arthur left school and learned photography, engaged in business at Baltimore, conducting the finest gallery in city from 1858 until after the inauguration of the Civil War. Became a government photographer. About 1862 or 1863 went to St. Louis, Missouri, where in partnership conducted gallery 3 or 4 years, then came to Quincy. Married Alvina Ganzhorn in St. Louis.

Text with a circa 1860s CDV by Fischer & Bro., 95 W. Baltimore Street of a woman: "Arthur was the son of Frederick, Maryland druggist George Fischer. In 1860, the family had moved to Baltimore, where Arthur was listed in the census as a photographer. As with so many Americans, Arthur had an itchy foot. In 1870, he worked in St. Louis, Missouri. By 1880, he had settled down in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, with wife Alvina and two sons, Arlington Lee Fischer and Arthur J. Fischer, Jr. After retiring, he lived with his son Arlington in Salem, Ohio, and probably died there."
