Unsourced obituary on Find A Grave, April 6, 1903. Capt. Joseph Rupert Gorgas b. at Greensburg, near Pittsburg, Penn. On 7th of Feb. 1829 and came to Madison with the late Irby Smith 50 years ago this month to clerk in his dry goods store.

Letter from Margaret M. Bridwell of the Filson Club to Wilbur D. Peat, August 5, 1955; Wilbut D. Peat Research Papers at the Indianapolis Museum of Art [viewed September 6, 2020, http://ulib.iupuidigital.org/cdm/ref/collection/WilburPeat/id/9063] States that Gorgas married her great aunt, Delphina Verry. Her family records state that he was born Feb. 7, 1828 at Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania and died April 6, 1903 in Madison. Their child Ann "Tottie" married Edward Powell. Margaret's brother Frank S. Morris of Cleveland has a painted portrait of Joseph Gorgas, in which he wears a Union uniform.

COLLECTIONS:  according to GEH photographer's database, the HIS and GEH each report modest holdings by Joseph R. Gorgas; As of about 1995, Frank Gunter of Madison, IN owned a quarter plate ambrotype of Gorgas's Daguerrian Boat docked near Madison on the Ohio River.  Madison stores are visable in the background.  He also owns 2 heavily painted photographs on copper by Gorgas.  He acquired them from Mrs. Windle, whose husband John bought them at a Madison sale in 1952.

The Madison Daily Courier, Oct. 26, 1854, [ad appeared through Jan. 31. 1855] p. 3 ad: J. R. Gorgas, cor. Main Cross & West Sts., fashionable Daguerrean Gallery uniformly marks good, fine-toned, distinct, well relieved, artistic pictures. An inspection of the pictures on the walls of his gallery will prove what we say,and induce the visitor to have his likeness taken.

Came to Madison in 1853 and have been in the business in this place ever since with the exception of 3 yrs spent on a floating gallery on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers (the happiest years of my life) with a handsome boat 65 ft. long, well appointed, a good cook, with flute, violin, and guitar, had a jolly time, did not need any advertising, and never did any Sunday work. The last Daguerreotype I ever made was on a half size plate, of a cotton gin, with negroes at work on it on Col. Donaldson's plantation back of Greenville, Mississippi.  For that kind of work I used a prism on my lenses so as to get a positive impression. My verdict was there never was anything more beautiful than the good old Daguerreotype.

Warrick Democrat, 1855, as quoted in Pioneer Painters of Indiana, Wilbur Peat, p. 47: We announce to citizens of Newburgh and vicinity, that we have landed out Boat at the Ferry Landing, are  prepared to take Daguerreotypes and paint portraits in oil or French Pastels, in the finest style, and shortest possible time. Our boat is fitted up expressly for daguerreotyping. Our light is of the best kind, which enables us to take the largest sized groups in a few seconds of time.  Call and see us; you will find us capable of producing all work pertaining to the Heliographic art, and on the lowest terms. -Gorgas & Bro. [also brief editorial calling attention to ad.]
