Beck's Studio: John W. Beck was another Greensburg photographer during the cabinet card era. John was born 30 March 1865, and came to Indiana to teach school. During his years as a teacher, he became interested in photography, and began photographing professionally in 1885. John lived in Osgood, Knightstown, Carthage and Kokomo before he settled in Greensburg. He married Dollie Smith 25 December 1891. Beck's Studio opened in 1911, and was still operating when Harding's History of Decatur County was published in 1915. Beck, photographer of Greensburg, Indiana, b. 30 Mar. 1865 in Jay County, Indiana (mistake, below it states Jay County, Ohio, and his place of education supports Ohio), son of Isaac and Millicent (Reeve) Beck. Reared and educated I Columbiana and Mahoning Counties, Ohio, including schools at Canfield, Delaware, ad Ohio Weslyan Universites. While attending latter place he was offered position in IN, and came west, taught school for four years, and then became interested I photography at McKeesport, where he spent three years. He then came to IN and has been here ever since. After living for a time at Osgood, Knightstown, Carthage and Kokomo, he permanently settled at Greensburg, where he has built up a prosperous business and a large circle of warm friends. Independent political views, member of Methodist Episcopal church. Began career as photographer in 1885, his present place of business ahving been established in 1911, is known as Beck's studio. He has a fully equipped place and is prepared to do all kinds of inside and outside photography, of the highest quality. Parents were Quakers and wore the Quaker garb. Their ancestry were "Friends" for several generations back. His father died in 1865 and the mother took her 5 children back to the old home in Eastern Ohio, Children: Jonas Marion, Ellen, Anna May, Isaac Edwin, ad John W. John m. 25 Dec. 1891 to Dollie Smith, Decatur County. Two children: Adene ad Serlett.
