Madison Business Man Was Photographer In This City Years Ago George Lawson Spaulding, 87, a Madison business man and former photograph studio operator, died at 3:00 yesterday afternoon following a long illness at his home, 515 Mulberry street. Mr. Spaulding was a son of the late William and Sarah Steel Spaulding, and was born on a farm at Christiansburg in Brown county. When a young man he became interested in photography and learned the profession at Nashville and in Columbus. He located in Madison 60 years ago and this city had since been his home. For a time he was associated with Madison photographers and later acquired his own studio which he operated many years. After he gave up his business he managed a studio a short time for a friend in Indianapolis, then returned here and re-entered his chosen business. He later accepted a position as official photographer at the Madison State hospital where he served until he retired about 10 years ago. Meanwhile, in 1910, Mr. Spaulidng and his brother-in-law, the late George D. Schwab, entered the drygoods business in Madison under the firm name of Spaulding and Schwab. He retained an interest in this business until his death. He was active in the former Knights of Phythias lodge and uniform rank of the order in this city and for years was also a member of the Red Men. He was married in 1891 at Decatur, Ill., to the late Emma Schwab Spaulding, who preceded him in death in 1933. He is survived by a son and daughter, Howard H. Spaulding, of this city, and Mrs. Carl H.
