     Ex-News Photographer, Albert Smith Piers, Died. Albert Smith Piers, one of Louisville's old-time news photogrpahers, died late Friday night in Miami, Fla. He was 82. Had lived in Florida since he left the Courier-Journal about 25 years ago. Previously had worked for the old Louisville Herald and The Herald-Post. Piers was also a commercial photographer here for many years in the days when photographers used flash powder for artificial light. The powder was later replaced by flash bulbs. 
     After he left Louisville, Piers worked as a photographer for the Roney-Plaza Hotel in Miami, The Miami Herald, and The Miami Beach News. In recent years he lived with a brother, T. J. Piers, in Miami Beach. [Lists survivors, includes portrait of him from 1926.]

The body of Albert (Al) Smith Piers, 82, old-time newspaper reporter and photographer, who died Friday, today was sent to Jeffersonville, Ind., for burial. Piers, who lived at 1045 Pennsylvania Ave., Miami Beach, came to Miami 20 years ago, at the close of a colorful career in the newspaper business. For many years he was on the staffs of the Louisville Herald and the Courier-Journal, and during the Spanish American War was in Cuba for the Associated Press. He had travelled with many Presidents and presidential nominees, and for years he handled publicity for the Indianapolis Speedway. Member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church on the Beach. Leaves brother Tom of Miami Beach; 3 daughters: Mrs. Charles Saunders and Mrs. Robert N. Hart of Louisville, and Mrs. C. E. Mulland, of Jeffersonville, and sister Mrs. Sam Hallett, of St. Louis.

They divorced and she married Dr. John Roach Wathen on June 6, 1908. Albert Piers married Helen Virginia Hagerman on March 30, 1911 and there were the parents of Mary Alene Piers. They migrated to Louisville.

Our New Studio. Today a representative of the News called on Al Piers at his new photograph studio on Spring street opposite the post office and was delighted with the arrangement of his place. [Gives history of his employment in other studios.] Mr. Piers first opened in business for himself at Alexandria but at the request of his many friends he comes back to Jeffersonville and we together with numberous others, extend to him a hearty welcome and predict an abundance of success. His studio is equipped with all of the latest appliances and he is prepared to do the best of all kinds of enlarging, crayon and other work. The public should not fail to visit Mr. Piers and see the specimens of his workmanship which he has on exhibition. If business with him continues as it has begun, it will be but a few days until he will have a number of Jeffersonville faces in his showcase.
