His father, James Westervelt, was a prosperous dry goods merchant. In 1850, Charlotte Westervelt was living with four of her children in Berrien, Michigan. According to a local history, James D. Westervelt began his photography career at age 14 in Niles, Michigan. He had a studio in Niles until at least 1863. On 11 May 1864, James enlisted in Company B, 138th Indiana Infantry Regiment. Plagued by a series of illnesses, James was medically discharged on 21 September 1864. He then opened a studio in LaPorte, Indiana, remaining there for two years. On 6 December 1865, he married Emma Fairfield Conklin (born circa October 1849); the couple did not have children. In 1866, James paid the requisite tax for a Class B license as a photographer in Cassopolis, Michigan. From 1870 to 1872, he ran a studio in Mishawaka, Indiana, and from 1872 through 1875, he was a photographer in Elkhart, Indiana. From Elkhart he relocated to Muskegon, Michigan, where he operated a studio until 1883. In 1884, James and Emma moved to Los Angeles, California, where he would work as a photographer until circa 1910. James Dallas Westervelt passed away in Los Angeles on 27 February 1918. His only print on many card and cabinet mounts is "J. D. Westervelt, Photographic Artist" or J. D. Westvelt, Photo. Artist" so Tinder speculates that he probably maintained his mobility until he settled in Muskegon in 1875. At some time he lived in Elkhart. James attended inaugural convention of PAA at Chicago in August of 1880. Reported in October of 1883 that he sold his Muskegon gallery.
