Photographer Daniel Russell Clark was born 13 May 1831 in Windham, Connecticut, the son of Eli B. Clark (1793-1855) and Mary Howard (1792-1837); Mary Howard passed away giving birth to the couple’s eighth child. In 1850, Daniel was living on a farm with his father, a mother-in-law [stepmother?], and three siblings in Plymouth, Ohio; the family had real estate valued at $3,500. On 25 October 1857, Daniel married Euphemia Mahin (10 July 1838 - 1 December 1877) and the couple would have at least four children. In 1860, the couple was living in Noblesville, Indiana, and Daniel’s occupation was listed as artist; the family had real estate valued at $500 and a personal estate of $100. In 1862, Daniel paid the required tax for a Class B license as a photographer in Indianapolis, Indiana. It appears that he also set up a gallery in Lafayette, Indiana, and was listed in 1867-1874 Lafayette directories as a photographer, although the directories indicated that he was boarding in Lafayette. In the 1870 census, Daniel and his family were counted twice, as living in Indianapolis and as living in Lafayette; in both cases, he was listed as a photographer. In his listing for Lafayette, photographer William Taylor was living with the family. In 1874, Daniel was part of a U.S. government expedition to Vladivostok, Russia, to study the transit of Venus. On the return voyage, Daniel took photographs in Japan and Ceylon that were later published as stereo-views. Daniel Clark was still working as a photographer in Indianapolis in 1880; at that time, his oldest son was assisting him in the studio. Daniel left Indianapolis circa 1888, and was listed as a photographer in an 1889 Chicago, Illinois directory. Daniel R. Clark passed away in Chicago on 26 April 1895.
