Obituary provided by Judith on ancestry.com, April 2003, who commented "Comparing his age with earlier census information, he'd shaved 8 yrs. off, probably to better appeal to a 2nd wife. Also, we have never found a hint that his family had lived in Madison Co., IN though that was given as his birth place. Probably mixed it with Madison Co., KY where his parents married." NOTE: I'm not sure if this is the Indiana photographer.

Passed On - Louis Moberly, an old and respected citizen of McCune, Kansas died at the family residence in this city at 8:30p m: on Friday, February 27th, 1914, aged 74 years, 1 month and 12 days after a prolonged sickness, extending over the past six years.
He was born in Madison county Indiana, being the youngest of eight children born to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Drury Moberly. He removed with the family to Illinois in an early day, then to Livingston county, Mo.In early life he took up the work up of a photographer, which he followed through life at different places, and at the time of his death he and Pap Cramer of St Louis were the two oldest photographers west of the Mississippi river. During the civil war he allied himself with the Union, and was one of the Home Guards of Missouri and during services as such, he was wounded, but never applied for a pension. In early life he became a member of the Christian church which faith he remained until the end.

Thank you for your reply, but since Louis (Lewis) was frequently used in the Moberly line, I am unable to confirm this particular Lewis Moberly was a photographer. Lewis Wade Moberly was the son of William Moberly, and was b. Apr. 7, 1852 in Sullivan County, and d. 1933. He m. Mary E. Sprout (1859-1946). I have photos of their tombstones in Humphreys, Missouri (Sullivan Co.) William Moberly d. 1856 and was the son of Drury Moberly.
Drury did have a son, Louis, who was a photographer, but moved his studio around. He was in Chillicothe, Webb City, Mo and McCune, KS before passing on in 1914. I descend from Drury's son, John T. Moberly, but will see if others I'm in contact with can help. May take a little time. Regards, Judith

The St. Louis Photographer, p. 31: endorsement letter dated Dec. 18, 1883 from Louis Moberly of Greensburg to the Iowa City Dry Plate Co.

The St. Louis Photographer, June 1886, p. 175:
extract from 2-column article in Greensburg Review about Moberly's new a spacious gallery: suit of 10 rms; reception rm. 18x38' with Brussels carpet, furnished with settees, piano, chandelier, sofas, fine pier mirror reaching from floor to ceiling, show cases, including one revolving show case that winds up like a clock and runs 24 hrs.; operating rm. well furnished, speaking tubes run from operating rm. to printing rm, retoucher's rm. and frame rm. so that orders can be sent and received from each without trouble; splendid toilet and dressing room, furnished with nice marble-top dresser and every convenience; south through carpeted hall we come to dry plate rm., with double doors, so that one can pass in and out without letting any light enter. Here Mr. Moberly manufacturers his own plates which he says are as good as any he can get.

excerpt from a local paper about L. Moberly of Doyle Block, Greensburg: At head of stairs is large and spacious reception rm, where is displayed some very fine work. In front is the work room, built upon the latest style  as planned by Mr. L. Moberly.  The scenery and ground work is on rollers, and arranged perfectly.  The laboratory, work rooms and storage rooms are all nicely arranged, and with the latest conveniences.  The building, 38x100', containing 10 rms. Describes a cable system for taking photos of children.
