To the Public. Geo R. Gamble has been advertised by a photographer of this city, and has done some work which has been exhibited by the photographer as his own work. As Mr. Gamble, when he sold City Gallery, agreed in the contract not do any photographic work either directly or indirectly in Muncie for a period of ten years he laid himself liable to damages when he got out the work that Mr. Goodlander exhibits as his own. Mr. Gamble has been served with notice of a suit for damage and has quit Goodlander's gallery. Terrible Accident. Again it becomes our duty to chronicle the particulars of a heart-rending railroad accident. The excursion train over the "Pumkin Vine" R. R. to M. D. Windy's photograph gallery with two engines attached met with quite a serious accident before it reached its destination. Geo. R. Gamble the working engine in front suddenly detached itself from the train, leaving M. D. Windy, the "Sham" engine behind at a sand-still unable to push a pound and "tooting" for help to carry the train through. Further particulars later.

Sarah Elizabeth [daughter of Henry V. and Mary Ann (Copeland) Davis] married George R. Gamble, a photographer of Champaign, Ill.; they have two children.

     George R. Gamble lived in Center, Indiana, just prior to operating the Gamble photography studio in Champaign between 1880 and 1890. By 1891, he was operating as Gamble and Stafford at No. 53 N. Walnut Street in Champaign, Champaign County, Illinois.
     On July 7, 1908, the Urbana Daily Courier newspaper article "So He is There; Gamble Heard From," reported "George R. Gamble, mentioned below, in a clipping taken from a Los Angeles paper, is a former Champaign business man. George R. Gamble, who left the Twin Cities with an unsavory reputation, which has not improved with the lapse of time: 'George R. Gamble, who solicited insurance money for eleven photograph galleries in Ohio, each of which burned in rapid succession, is enroute to Ohio in the custody of Sheriff E. P. Humphreys of Bellefontaine.'
     Gamble was arrested here by Under Sheriff Edward Disman, two weeks ago yesterday, and on the arrival of extradition papers was turned over to Sheriff Humphreys. Gamble was following the business of a photographer in Los Angeles."
     In the publication State Fire Marshal Eighth Annual Report to the Governor of Ohio for the Year 1907, by D. S. Creamer, Columbus: Fred J. Herr, State Printer, 1908, the following entry for George R. Gamble appears under "Histories of Crimes for Which Convictions Were Had, To Defraud Insurance Companies."
     One could conclude after looking at the distasteful newspaper advertisement used by George Gamble in The Daily Illini, during at least 1891 and 1892, that his character was questionnable.  photo eyeroll.gif
     Perhaps by coincidence or irony, Gamble did not "improve with the lapse of time." On July 13, 1933 — 25 years after his conviction for arson and defrauding insurance companies — the Urbana Daily Courier reported that George Gamble's photograph gallery on West Main in Urbana, Illinois, caught fire after an explosion of chemicals and was completely destroyed by the flames.

PHOTOGRAPHER ARRESTED ON TOLEDO ARSON CHARGE
George R. Gamble, a photographer conducting a gallery at 1446 East First street, has been arrested by sheriff's officers on the telegraphic request of Sheriff McDonough of Toledo, Ohio, on a charge of arson. It Is alleged that Gamble a year ago when living in Toledo set fire to a building in order to collect the Insurance on the contents. Gamble collected the Insurance and then disappeared from Toledo. He came to Los Angeles a few months ago. Sheriff McDonough, who now Is In San Francisco to secure another fugitive, will arrive here tomorrow to take the prisoner back.
