Since the inception of this project in the late 1980s, hundreds of people have shared their knowledge, collections, and computer expertise for the Directory of Indiana Photographers, and I am profoundly grateful for their contributions. Special Thanks

My husband John M. Harris encouraged me to expand my research statewide and helped create this database in about 1990. Little did he know that he would have to forever-after wait long hours as I looked at photographs in flea markets, tolerate never-ending annual fees for genealogy and newspaper subscriptions, plan vacations around research trips, and listen to new discoveries about the topic ad infinitum. He shares my gratitude to repositories that digitize newspapers and directories, so at least now most research takes place at home.

Thanks to the board of The Indiana Album, a non-profit incorporated in 2015, who agreed to accept the Directory of Indiana Photographers database as a project in 2019. With their digital community archive and a mission to promote Indiana’s visual history, this is a good fit.

The Indiana Historical Society provided the seed money for this web page in the form of a $4,999 Heritage Support Grant made possible by Lilly Endowment Inc.

Kudos to the fabulous Jenna Auber, a recent IUPUI Public History graduate hired with IHS grant funds. She shares a love of historic photographs and her research skills this past year helped us add hundreds of new photographers plus biographical details. Thanks also to former Indiana Album employee Ange Bolton, who did research and data entry.

Robert Harris has volunteered 100+ hours to clean-up our Microsoft Access database that had sometimes inconsistent data entered over three decades. Rob designed and developed a more robust data model using Microsoft SQL Server and wrote code to extract, transform, and load data from the old database. His program to forward engineer the data and HTML to create this web page brought this project to the public earlier than anticipated. But this is just a start, and we value his vision and guidance to transform this static web page into a dynamic, searchable resource. Stay tuned…
